The Traveling Zine Box

The Traveling Zine Box

Group for the traveling zine box, in which zinesters pass a box of zines along, taking what they want from it and replacing the taken zines with the same number from their collection. Then off to the next person!

I frequently participate (and am mildy obsessed with) www.bookcrossing.com. It's a site where you can register and track where your books go, make journal entries about what you thought of the books, trade books, etc. One of the things you can do on the site is start or participate in a "bookbox." The idea of a bookbox is that you send out a box of books to the first in a list of participants. They look through it, take out a few books, go through their old books and put the same number back that they took from the box.

Unfortunately, you can't trade zines on bookcrossing because they aren't technically books and don't hold up well when mailed again and again or released into the wild. However, I love bookboxes so much that I'd really like to do something similar with zines.

I would put a certain number of zines in a box or big envelope and then gather a list of people who want to participate. I would send it off to the first person, they would take some zines, and then add the same number of zines from their collection. Then they would send a message to the next person in line to get their mailing address and send it off to them and so on.

At the end, the last person sends the box/envelope back to me.

Hi, I'd love to participate and Ken Bausert's idea is very reasonable!

I'm located in Kent, England

I'd go along with the "Traveling Zine Box" (as described in the header) and I would even agree to ship once overseas. So, it would probably make sense for everyone in the US who wants to take part to pass the box around (taking out what they want, replacing with some from their own collection) and, then, when all the US participants are done, we could send it to someone in Europe. Then, it would probably be cheaper for the Europeans to pass it around between themselves before shipping it to Malaysia or Australia (which are close to each other and probably less expensive to exchange with each other). Sound logical?

Another thing: there is no more "surface" mail from the US to other countries (used to be a cheap rate that went by boat & took weeks to get there). Now, it's all "Air Mail" and takes only days to arrive.

I would love to do this as I have a rather large amount of zines that I've intended to donate to a zine library, but it seems every time I'm ready to ship it, they move and they currently don't have a permanent home.

International shipping is expensive though, like $13+ for anything over a few ounces, and once you get above a pound I think it would be cost prohibitive.

Cassian Lodge - UK

Carlos Palacios Hidalgo - Germany

Ken Bausert - USA

Marisa Repin - Malaysia

Anyone else? It's looking like everyone needs to be willing to ship overseas, too. I'll post an appeal in the other similar group I found.

I'd love to join. I'm in Malaysia, though - so only if the others are okay with the shipping cost/time it takes. I don't mind shipping out to other countries myself, but it does take awhile to arrive.

Okay, so that's three people! Any more takers?

@Ken Hmmm, that is pretty pricey! Let's wait and see if anyone else wants to join in. :)

Cassian: I'm in New York & I see that you're in United Kindkom. It would probably cost me $15-20 to send 10 zines to you (and equally high cost from you to me)...

@Ken I'm not sure I've got enough for a whole box! Maybe ten or so? Where are you?
