Conference Update!

SO! Lots has happened since I created this group...

Here is a new plan for a conference: Let's all meet up at the Wayside Center for Popular Education in the Blue Ridge mountains. It is a beautiful location and specifically tailored for radical organizing. We could meet up some weekend in the fall and talk about zines.

A major part of the conference would be getting Lips people together and working on opening chapters at Virginia Tech and Mary Washington. But, depending on who is interested we could also have other broader workshops.

Announcing the first Handmade & Bound Nashville festival! Saturday, Oct. 1, at Watkins College of Art, Design, & Film in Nashville, Tenn. This festival is for publishers of zines and mini-comics, creators of artists' books, and other handmade printed media. Registration now open! More info at handmadeboundnashville.wordpress.com.

In addition to the festival, Watkins is sponsoring a juried book arts & zine exhibition, on the theme Encoded Structures: Interpreting the Story, to be held in the Watkins gallery during the month of October. Submissions are being accepted now through August 1.

Hey everyone. So due to lack of funds and some health issues, the lips bus will not happen. However, I hope everyone stays involved in this group, because I think it is a great way to regionally organize and help our fellow southeast zinez. I know that the idea of a conference has been bubbling up in Williamsburg again, so keep your ears/eyes open for updates. ALSO is anyone going to the DC zine fest this summer?

PLEASE HELP! The deadline is running out for fundraising for The Lips Bus, a veggie bus dedicated to starting discussions about independent media and sexuality. If everyone in this group donated $10 or more, that would REALLY help us meet our deadline of the 17th when we can't fundraise online anymore! Please help support a fellow zinestress with big dreams:

Call for Submissions/Donations
Radical Southern Zine Archive Project
University of Alabama

The University of Alabama is looking for submissions/donations for a new archive that will collect zines from Southern authors, and zines about Southern experience. This collection will be housed within the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library and once cataloged will be available for any scholar or zine enthusiast looking for research opportunities or just a nice afternoon read. This project began as the brainchild of our students and staff who have been creating zines, using zines in the classroom, and have a general love of all things zine related.

The goal of the collection is to gather together the work of individuals who are writing in the South, writing about the South and zinsters who are Southerners living across the world. It is our belief and hope that the Radical Southern Zine Archive will help bring together the work being produced everywhere about the South and house it where all can enjoy it. We want all those Southern perspectives so send us your zines and let’s get this process started. If anyone has any questions please email us and we will get back to you ASAP.

The official opening of the Radical Southern Zine Archive will take place in September, and will kick off a yearlong celebration of the zine and the zine community. We look forward to hearing from each and every one of you.

Send your zines to:
