neither doll houses nor tree houses: on living outside of the gender binary
finished in under 24 hours for the chicago zine fest, this zine focuses on the ups and downs of finding myself outside of the gender binary and attempts to both de- and re-construct various questions about my own gender as well as gender in general. three separate sections discuss feeling pushed out of femininity, how masculinity is viewed as inherent and femininity is viewed as a fictitious performance, how striving for the “perfect balance” of two genders is not plausible nor an adequate solution, acceptance or tolerance (or neither) that i feel in specific spaces, how my radical friends misgender and disrespect me more often than my non-radical ones, the (non-) accessibility of queer jargon and language, how coming out has garnered me the most intense gender assumptions yet, dealing with friends who don’t “get it”, my desire to validate my own identity without stepping on the identity of others, and checking white privilege. 32 pgs, ½ size, b&w. $2-3 or trade. message me or e-mail youvegotafriendinpa (at) gmail (dot) com for more info!

“Not ‘Queer’ as in ‘Radical’ but ‘Lesbian’ as in Fuck You,” is follow up to “Reimagining Queer Community,” a twenty-four hour perzine I made in July, 2011. Since July, I have continued mulling over nuanced, and often controversial, questions regarding my association with the lgbt community at large. “Not ‘Queer’ as in ‘Radical’ but ‘Lesbian’ as in Fuck You” is a perzine that explores my recent decision to use the word “lesbian” as a substitution for “queer.” I also talk about male domination and sex-right in supposedly “sex positive” queer spaces, the perpetuation of misogynistic troupes and devaluation of lesbian identities within “progressive” and “feminist” communities, owning up to & attempting to combat transphobia that has historically emanated from within lesbian spaces, and queer as hierarchical social capital.
1 / 4 size, text heavy & 16 pages. for snail mail or trading, please e-mail rachelzines at gmail dot com.

you’ve got a friend in pennsylvania #6
my issues with mental health have always been immensely difficult for me to assess, describe, and talk about. an intensely private person, i have kept most of my struggles to myself. in this zine, i attempt to investigate the traces of anxiety, depression, suicide, and alcoholism in my family’s history as well as my own difficulties with these issues. almost split into two zines due to volume, this issue is a hefty assortment of stories, thoughts, and emotions.
eight sections discuss: the secrecy surrounding my family’s history of suicides, a recent suicide in my family, my issues with anxiety and pushing emotions aside, my reoccuring suicidal thoughts and how my identities intersect with them, talking with a fellow queer/trans* friend struggling with suicide, assessing my tumultuous relationship with alcohol and deciding to become consciously sober, what i can do to manage and deal with things, and what i plan to do in the future. there is a trigger warning for the zine relating to depression, anxiety, suicide, self-harm, alcoholism, sexual assault, and abuse - please take care of yerself before you read this - it is intense.
this zine is extremely text heavy, black & white, 46 pages, and 1/2 size. for purchasing or trading, please e-mail youvegotafriendinpaATgmailDOTcom or get in touch with me on here!

Comment by DawnZilla on December 15, 2011 at 5:10pm Hey everyone! I work with a queer youth drop-in center and advocacy organization here in Vermont. I'm going to be doing an ongoing zine group and was hoping for some donations to our zine library for youth to read and be inspired by. I'm specifically looking for zines by queers (LGBTQQ) and/or that would be somehow relevant to queer youth (ages 13-22). As queer youth are disproportionately impacted by substance abuse, suicide, homelessness, etc., zines related to these issues or promoting self care, etc are very welcome. It would especially be great to have zines created by queer youth... Just sayin!
Please feel free to get in touch if you're interested in donating or if you have any questions.

Comment by Paper Monster Press on October 24, 2011 at 9:51am ONE LAST RALLYING CRY FOR QUEER PUNK: DEADLINE EXTENDED (OCTOBER 31, 2011)
You draw lines and you draw lines, and then you shape boxes and boxes and try to decide which ones fit you best. But have you ever stepped outside the line, and think, coming this far, how much farther would you dare? That’s why, people who are openly queer call this term coming out of the closet. Because we close ourselves, and cage our hearts, and throw away the key. This issue, we dare you to come out with us. Cross those lines on tightropes, shrug off gender boundaries, do away with stereotypes. We are who we are, and if we know this then labels don’t matter at all. Because we’ve got to honour the differences, or what’s the same wouldn’t count.
And who could be more queer, or more punk than us? We ask you once again to trust us with your submissions. We ask you to explore the boundaries of gender, race, stereotypes, rebellion, and anarchy. We ask you to give us your poetry, your art, and your music, in its most rebellious, most queer punk. Mainstream or underground, gay or lesbian, hardcore or soft porn, and hey, even alpha males are welcome. We want you to colour our worlds queer(punk). Now there are no rules, no boundaries, we’ll make our love on wastelands and through the barricades (Spandau Ballet).
We are interested in works that question, that reveal, that critique, that ask, that makes us curious. We want to see colors, and explosions, and madness, we want works that ignite our passion for equality and justice. We want works that ask for human dignity for all. We want works that make us want to shrug off oppression, and put it aside to forever after never be worn by anyone again. Because Who in the New World does not have a horror of the past, whether his ancestor was torturer or victim? Who in the depth of conscience, is not silently screaming for pardon or revenge? The pulse of New World history is the racing pulse beat of fear, the tiring cycles of stupidity and greed (Derek Walcott). And it need be that no longer. In the dawn of the New Age, we ask you to join us to fight for human dignity for all. Gay or lesbian, man or woman, colored or white; all different, all beautiful. And in this great future, you can forget your past, so dry your tears, I say (Bob Marley).
