Go Car-Free, 7 Reasons to Start Biking

The Sweet Treat Press needs your help! We've written a biking advocacy zine but we need help to fund printing. We've launched a project on Kickstarter and it's mega awesome so go check it out.

Our Goals

We want to print 500 copies of the zine on 100% recycled paper and distribute those copies to independent bookstores to promote biking and zines.

We need to raise our printing money by August 15th or we won't get any of the funds pledged thus far. It only takes a few minutes and you can pledge as little as $1!

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: ASUANG by PAPER MONSTER PRESS

Asuang is an umbrella term for creatures that people our imagination. As blood suckers, they engender in us, a fear of the dark, of morbidity, of paleness, of incense. The fear that desires, the fear that suffocates, not just creatures but open spaces and high places. Fear of beings that when looked at mirrors or through other eyes, resemble perhaps, ourselves? Then here maybe, there be monsters?

Asuang then calls not just for darkness but for hallucinogen, psychedelia, kaleidoscopic narratives in whatever genre.

Specifically, we ask for:
1. 1-3 poems/ essays/ flash fiction (less than 500 words, English or Filipino)

2. 1-3 artworks in black/ white (in JPEG format)

3. 1-3 sound pieces in MP3 or Wav format

4. Critical essays about the small press/ underground publishing/ the culture of fanzines (also under 500 words)

5. Reviews of any issue of Paper Monster Press (and we’ve done 6 so far)

6. A theme for 1 print year

b. Issue 2: Free Tibet (about culture clash/ Buddhism/ heights/ climbing/ pure dizziness of clouds)
c. Issue 3: Time-space Warp (about timezones/ cultural differences/ time and space/ reincarnation/ and the endless echoes we can never reach)
d. Issue 4: Labyrinths (canals/ road bridges/ the strange and devious routes we take to fantasy/ intoxication/ escape)

2. The deadline for submissions is on May 31, 2012.

2 outdoor zines i did:
ONE is the beach zine I mention in my previous post - send me a post address & I'll happily post a copy to you.

The SECOND I just want to share here because it was really satisfying:

I took part in a 2 week trail-making camp on Lake Baikal in Siberia. 16 of us took part in total, half Russian and half other, all camping and cooking together on the beach. The work was quite light but we had to cope with all the usual stuff of outdoor living (digging a shitpit, cooking, chopping wood, creating midgie-masks, encountering beasties) and it was a wonderful experience.

I shared my beach zine with people and, when I realised we all got on really well, insisted that everyone did a page for a collective zine. I was already drawing a diary and other people were writing poems, diaries, song lyrics etc.. so it had a good headstart and it was really satisfying to explain what fanzines are and can be to Russians - Russia lacks so many things that are taken for granted (by me) in the Western world, like gig posters, comics etc.. (But then they share things in other ways, like copying out favourite poems into notebooks and sharing them or giving them as gifts.)

Every single person contributed (at least) a page, including cartoons, fictionalised accounts, 'top ten experiences' & the like. Some of them were really carefully thought through and (I think) quite beautiful. I got such a lot of love back through these pages that I feel almost guilty at the sentiments and efforts they made.

Back in the nearest city, the day after the camp finished, I went to the Russian post office and braved the photocopying counter. Despite having no Russian and fearing Russian bureaucracy, it was all quite straightforward and I was able to give most of the participants (still in the city) a copy of the zine to keep before we split up. A few others I need to post.

So I wanted to share this experience, and I can't offer copies of the zine as only enough were made for the participants, but a few images are on my blog to give more of an idea of it, and I might scan the pages also.

The day after the london zine symposium, I intend to get the bus from newcastle to the beach and sand dune system that runs in an almost continuous line up to scotland. i will camp on the beach, doodle and drink coffee away from the city (unless it rains). This will become my next zine (probably a mini zine), and i would like you to be a part of it by giving me a post address (uk only) that i can send a postcard to.

I will just take a photo of some element of your postcard and include that in the zine so your effort is minimal to say the least!

It might be a doodle of a puffin, or a moan about feeling lonely, but it will be from the dunes, and the sand, and the early morning birdprints and seals in the water.

You HAVE to tell me by sunday 6pm or i will actually be living on the beach and unable to see your address! email = oldglen at gmail.com
