We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

I'm so discouraged. I really want to draw a series of comic strips for a zine, but every time I sit down to draw a comic, my mind goes completely blank. I want it to be sarcastic and funny. I want my characters to be out there, so that people will remember them. But nothing funny ever happens to me. I've tried making up my own funny things to draw about, and I can't. Everything i think of seems stupid.

Personally, when I was last blocked I just drew myself sat on a chair in an empty room...then I repeated the drawing numerous times just adding in objects...the final image was an empty chair in a cluttered room.....it worked, an all because I couldn't decide what to draw.(>:))
Yep, coming up with good ideas is the hard part! Maybe if you just do a bunch of sketching/doodling without worrying about ideas something will work its way out...
there is a great book about writing/art by Lynda Barry called "What it is". get from library might find some great tips. Dont worry about becoming anything (funny, sarchastic...) Just write honestly and dont edit yourself(at first). If you are funny, scarey, boring, contemplative, it will come out. Just write and draw obsessively. Keep journals daily. It will all begin to flow. Also get some feedback later once you have a few things you like. It may hurt but will help. Good luck. Mostyn
