Call for submissions for stitches: a critical dialogue with queer/dyke culture
Cis white able-bodied lesbians do not own the word dyke, nor do they own queer women's culture. This zine is about moving beyond transphobic pseudo-radical feminist discourse. Let's re-envision what a radical, inclusive queer dyke culture could look like and feel like. Open to submissions from people of all gender identities. We will strive to center the voices of those who have been particularly oppressed by current lesbian and queer women's culture, including women of color, trans women, non-binary people and people with disabilities.
Deadline: Nov 6, 2011.
A smallish zine event in the Valley sounds awesome, but I'm a tad reluctant to "grab the reins" as a newbie zinester who just finished her first project. I'd be happy to help with promotion and organization if someone else with more experience was willing to say, lead a zine-making workshop, bring in seasoned zinesters to talk about their stuff, etc. I've got the enthusiasm, but not the cred. And I think there are a lot of others like me. Heh. : )
It is my belief that some sort of small zine convention or gathering would answer a lot of questions as to a zine library was viable in LA, I tend to think it's not. I'd say the zine heyday was the late 80's through mid 90's but the internet has ruined this for good. I've been doing my zine for near a decade now and not only are we finding it increasingly difficult to find places to drop our zine, I never see anyone else's efforts out there. I own a small bicycle shop in the valley and we could potentially use this space for an evening of zine fun, the venue would be not ideal but it would be free and that's a big plus. However, I do a lot of events already and I'd like someone that is willing to take the reigns on this one and get it together as my plate is beyond full. I can and will help in anyway I can. Any takers? This way we can gauge interest and trade zines etc, do all the cool things that made doing a zine fun back in the day.
the LA Zine Fest IS HAPPENING!!! We're planning on February 2012, we're still trying to secure a space! Vote for us, and help us win this contest so we can get this thing in motion!!!!
I live in El Monte and went to high school in San Gabriel. :) My address:

If you want to send first, I can make sure I get stuff together to do an even trade. My zines are perzines and are not SGV-specific, fyi.
