a place for zinesters - writers and readers
I've looked for a discussion about this but haven't been able to find one, so forgive me if this already exists.
Someone asked me if my zines are written in a character's voice, and I realized one of my characters would totally write zines, so I started writing a zine in her voice. Has anyone else done this? I know somemeone must have. And if you did, did you treat is a writing exercise and that was it, or did you trade?
Any experience about this or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
I think it's a really cool idea. I've sort of done the opposite-- most of the stories in my zines are purely fictitious, but I wrote and published one in first person that did not specify the names of the characters, and I kind of like that it read like a perzine and was a blending of fact and fiction. I do think that because zines are so often personal (and almost diary-like) that they provide a unique medium for creative genre blending. I like the idea of readers picking up a zine they don't know anything about, and, given expectations they might have from reading other zines, wondering what is real and what has been totally made up.
