What do You Consider Good Grunge Music? 2 Replies

There were a lot of good grunge bands from the late eighties all the way up to present, but there were a lot of shitty ones too.  Through the miasma known as the 90s, what would you consider your…Continue

Grunge was my era! I grew up in grunge. I love the classics like Alice In Chains but love the lesser known groups like Tad, Flipper, Melvins, Meat Puppets...Riot grrrl from around the same time like Babes in Toyland, Helium...And love the post punk stuff like Big Black even more. I love indie grungy stuff like Pavement, Polvo, Sebadoh as well.

Anyone into the Afghan Whigs? What about Temple of the Dog and Mad Season (one off groups)?

Anna, you need to check out Dinosaur Jr and Screaming Trees - they were the founding fathers of grunge - they are where all grunge like things have spawned from. MArk LAnegan (singer for Screaming Trees) is the embodiment of Grunge. J Macis of Dinosaur Jr is inspired - check out some vids on you tube - the way he abuses his guitar is amazing.....and the rawness of the music - its what grunge is all about. Remember Nirvana actually came after Soundgarden, AIC and PJ. The beauty of grunge is it can be so many things....Soundgarden are metally grunge, Alice in chains are bluesy grunge, Nirvana are more punky grunge.... Dinosaur Jr is more indie grunge.....thare are so many facets to the genre and that is why i love it so much.

Im not aware of any of the bands you mention below, or any newer grunge stuff so yeh a list of bands to check out would be awesome! Im stuck in the 90's!!! :D

i know this may sound typical, but i am still in love with grunge from 1993.. Sonic Youth, Dinosuar Junior, Hole, Nirvana... i grew up with these guys.. they shaped my view of the world, and society - "STUFF YOU!!!" -kinda thing.. keen to catch a glimpse of Kurts daughter.. wonder if she realises how much of an impact her dad had on the world, mainstream and alternative..
am glad to be a member... :)

HEy - good idea for a group!

I love all things grunge related. Definitely my favourite genre of music - I love all music but if I had to pick a genre that has defined my life and who I am today then Grunge has had the biggest impact on me. It has definitely made me who i am today - now whether that is a good or bad thing remains to be seen :D
