Curators Aimee Lusty and Kate Wadkins seek submissions for a feminist art zine to be released at the close of BRASS IN POCKET, a group show opening Friday, September 13, 2013 atBooklyn Artists Alliance.

The zine seeks to represent contemporary feminist artists who explore new possibilities in their respective media, producing work that breaks conventional boundaries in terms of subject and process. The zine also aims to challenge and play on traditional notions of “feminist art.” This is Booklyn Art Gallery’s third open call for submissions for a collaborative zine published in tandem with the gallery’s programming.

Submissions will be accepted in two sizes, 8.5 x 5.5 inches, or 8.5 x 7.5 inches. All submissions should be black and white, at 300dpi. The deadline for submissions is 7pm October 13, 2013. Please send all submissions to booklynopencall@gmail.com

Join us this Friday, September 13th from 7 - 10pm for the opening of the exhibition, BRASS IN POCKET.

I know people have mixed feelings about kickstarter around here, but I also know you all know what it's like to really want to make something happen.

I am going to make the next issue of Imaginary Windows at the Roberts Street Social Centre and I need a little help getting there. This is a community effort and has been making my heart grow ever larger. I hope you might take part in these  efforts and spread the word or get some zines

Muchacha Fanzine Issue #5, Spring 13'
“Brown Queen: Latina Voices of the 21st Century”

Publisher: Daisy Salinas, Riotgrrrl56@yahoo.com, Etsy, Tumblr, Wemakezines

“Brown Queen” was created to honor, celebrate and promote the artistic visions of Latinas. This 50 pg fanzine edition features beautiful poetry, heartfelt short stories, powerful essays, awe-aspiring artwork, unique photography and a breathtaking performance piece from 24 diverse self-identified Latinas, Chicanas, Hispanics and Afro-Latinas. This issue also spotlights a 5-page interview with artist Cristy C. Road about her most recent graphic novel Spit and Passion, zine subcultures in the 90's & today, spirituality and how she has learned to navigate her identity as a queer punk woman of color.

By providing a medium in where Latinas can share their unique voices, this issue, along with its Cinco de Mayo zine-release concert of the same name, has helped build a community of like-minded sisters of color. By sharing our stories and knowledge, “Brown Queen” challenges institutions, such as the mass media and education systems, which often exclude or misrepresent us. The continuation of our stories, knowledge and social-justice visions have the power to live on. “Brown Queen” is apart of the social justice continuum as it serves as time capsule to preserve our knowledge for future generations of women of color.
