a place for zinesters - writers and readers
I am new to this community and currently working on a zine project that examines processes of coming out and being called out. It's primarily about naming and identity and you can read the long version below:
"Thus, we sometimes cling to the terms that pain us because at a minimum, they offer us some form of social and discursive existence"
Judith Butler, Excitable Speech
I'm currently soliciting submissions in any creative format that can translate to paper which is no larger than half sheet in size pertaining to either coming out or name calling. That's the short of it.
SOME BACKGROUND: the long version
There are many labels applied to individuals based on personal characteristics which are thought to compose their identity. Some of the more salient components of identity are race, class, sex, gender, sexual orientation, sexuality, and ableness. This project will examine these aspects of identity, and the language used to identify ourselves, in concrete form by producing a series of publications which creatively depict the impact of any one of these pillars of identity. Of primary interest are the ways in which identity is the product of intersection- placing the individual within a specific position within a cultural superstructure that privileges certain identities over others.
There are different ways in which individuals undergo a process of disclosure that can be viewed as coming-out or being called out.
The first installment of Fresh Squeezed Circus will focus around coming/calling-out and the differing ways in which we disclose ourselves focusing on the a/effect of that disclosure. However, the counter part of this project is the recognition that we are not always in a position to come-out, others can 'steal' this right from us through processes of name-calling during which they hail the individual as either x or y.
Thus while we have the opportunity to name ourselves we are also subjected to a culture which often attempts to name for us our identity/self.
Written submissions can be delivered in any format but will ultimately be edited to fir within the parameters of the physical zine. You can loosely interpret the theme of coming out and name-calling but I encourage you to think critically/creatively about the myriad ways in which we confront our identities at various points in our lives and throughout differing contexts.
THERE WILL BE OTHER INSTALLMENTS of 'fresh squeezed circus' focusing on different themes throughout the term.
Submission deadline for this theme is Sept 15th
suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.
