Hi, ally here, depending on how you're determining disability.  I have mental health issues, would like to learn to be a better ally regarding physical disabilities.

I made a new zine recently and I had a group of stick figures, and I realized I could draw a stick figure in a wheelchair.  That was a big eye opener for me, as far a way to be more inclusive.

@incurable hippie I get what you mean. You're saying that your disability is more of a physical trait ( like eye colour or skin tone etc.) and not a characteristic of your personality, behaviour, actions and overall general way of being. I know what you mean. It's a difficult thing to grasp when society has already defined what constitutes you as a person, without necessarily having felt its affects themselves (itself?)

Anyways I should introduce myself. My name is kristi pereira and I am an cartoonist/illustrator (though not in any official sense- still in art school but only 3weeks left then grad!!! Hooroar!)

I want to start a zine ('twill be my first!) about accessibility, representation and my own personal accounts with disability.

I have had many surgeries (portal hypertension/ esophageal variecies compartment syndrome, tendon transfer, and a splenal-renal shunt),complete unilateral hearing loss ( just got CROS hearing aids 2 weeks ago!!!), CSPD (dermatillomania) a bit of trichotillomania, and am severely ADD inattentive ( just found that out for certain in February). I also work as a Behavioural Interventionist (ABA Therapy), worked for a year and a bit a a care worker with a really awesome lady who was non-verbal and has cerebral palsy, and volunteer-worked at a children's home in S.A. With babies who had HIV, hydrocephalus, cp .

Anyways the one thing I've noticed about all this is the attitudes and lack of resources available for those with a disability. It really frustrates the hell out of me that accessibility isn't usually considered in product/architecture design and that there can be a huge amount of shame surrounding ppl with a disability (both in themselves and with family members or friends) and complete disrespect and cruelty for people with disabilities. Or the way people "nobel-ize" others or themselves for being/working with/living with a person who has a disability. The worst is that I sometimes find myself unintentionally falling "victim" to a lot of these same faults, which shows me there is so much more I need to learn.

Hi Zinesters!
My name's Dawn. I am a former NYC public high school ESL teacher who taught zine-making to my students. Now, I'm in library school studying to become a community college/academic librarian, hopefully. 

Anyway, I am currently in an information literacy pedagogy course, and doing a research process project with the following research question:
"How do high school teachers create effective zine projects to help students of all learning abilities improve in their writing skills?"

I wrote this fanzine through a terrible period of chronic fatigue, it was a battle but I dont think the fanzine has suffered, its interesting to see how it effects my writing.

I write the blog over there and they are VERY supportive of disabled creative people. Their magazine is still struggling, but there's a lot of different ways you can support I.D.E.A.L. and they can support you. Check them out!

Hi, I have run a fanzine called Necronomicon for 10 years and I have just put out my 17th issue! Its about my general day to day life as I watch horror films. I have manic depression and fibromyalgia and have used writing and making the zine to get me through the highs and lows of my illness. Its a very chatty and personal fanzine at the same time as reviewing old horror films. If youre interested in writing anything (I like to encourage other disabled people to contribute and it has been a nice focus for some people writing for it) then send me a message.
