Call for Submissions!

All in Your Head is a traditional cut-and-paste style zine with a focus on LGBTQIA neurodivergent and disabled activists, zinesters, artists, and authors. Our zine operates on the following *principles: 1.) social inequality and injustice exists [racism, classism, ableism, heterosexism, cissexism to name a few]; 2.) disability, neurodiversity can be understood as a viable form of human difference that intersects with/is shaped by systems of dominance; 3.) claims that there is a “normal” bodymind can have damaging and harmful effects (physically/emotionally/spiritually) and are partly shaped by current social/cultural values and white western colonial histories; 4.) neuroatypical people and people with disabilities must navigate cultural taboos, move among complex institutions and systems of care and negotiate conflicting ideas of “wellness/illness,“ “silence/disclosure,” “visibility/invisibility;” “dis/ability” and more  5.) most importantly, our stories matter. (*this list is by no means exhaustive)

For the Fall 2016 edition of All in Your Head, we invite you to share first person narratives, essays, rants, poems, doodles, drawings, photography, collages (and more!) that address the concept of “cure.” We are seeking pieces that explore the theme "cures” as it relates to disabled bodyminds and ways that queer neurodivergent, disabled folks encounter and resist cultural stigma and self-authorize our existence.

We are seeking topics that address the following themes (and others):

  • “Cure culture” (Eli Clare) as a homogenizing/coercive force
  • Critiques of health, well-being, and wholeness as it is informed by white supremacy, colonialism, imperialism, racism, colorism, ableism, classism, homo/bi/transphobia and other forms of oppression;
  • Ways in which “curing” queerness, disability, and neurodiversity manifests as state and institutional violence;
  • Interconnections among racism, white supremacy, ableism, and state/institutional violence particularly in light of police violence and state surveillance of activist groups such as Black Lives Matter;
  • Queering cures and cure culture; trans and queer sick/neurodivergent/disabled narratives and grappling with the concept of “cure;”
  • Radically performing illness/sickness and other forms of resistance to “cure” culture;
  • Activist projects related to queerness, disability, and neurodivergence.
  • Have an idea not listed here? Submit anyway!

Send your submissions to allinyourheadzine@gmail.com before September 1st, 2016. Please send your submissions via email. For written submissions, please use Microsoft word and submit your writing in .doc or .docx format. Please try to limit submissions to 1500 words. (We are flexible. Let us know if you need a little extra space.) For artwork, please attach high resolution .jpg images to your email. Please include a title for your artwork and any information you would like readers to know about your piece (medium, location, tools used etc). Contributors have the option of sharing a short bio or publishing their work anonymously.

A 32 page 1/2 sized black and white zine roller derby zine designed with the new derby bout audience in mind. Topics covered would relate to basic derby rules, fun derby facts and derby history. This zine will be league neutral so can be sold by any league as a fundraiser (perfect for the merch table!)

Want to contribute? I'd love a list of topics you would like covered, favourite derby facts, derby related colouring pages, short derby anecdotes, ect.

Deadline: 20 July 2016

I have sat silent, processing the events of June 12th 2016. Watched as politicians use death as a means to rally their side of the isle. Held back tears watching family and friends of the victims speak of there loved ones.

I want to do something. We all want to do SOMETHING.

Our community is strongest when we work together. We are at war. Not just the LGBTQ community but all of American culture. And that is what sparked this idea. To quote RENT, “The opposite of war isn’t peace, it’s creation.”

That is want I want to do. I want to create a book containing 102 pieces of art, comics, stories, pin-ups, photos, etc. to honor the lives of each person who lost their life at PULSE in Orlando.

Below are the guidelines for submission, please pass it on to all friends that may want to contribute!

Calling 102 Cartoonists, Artist and Writers Respond to LGBTQ Hate, Gun Violence and Celebrating Our Strength.

It is with a sad heart and a determined head that we send out this rally call to comic creators, artist and writers! As we are all aware, gun violence and hate is out of control in this country. To easy is it for people with disdain in their hearts to get ahold of a weapon and use it to cause serious damage to our community and others like us.

Gun Controlled (Working title), is a zine responding to the tragic massacre that took place on June 12th at 2 am in an Orlando gay nightclub. We are looking for 102 comic creators, artists and writers to donate a one page piece of art, comic, cartoon, illustration, poem, etc. Each page is a representation of a lost life or wounded individual tragically associated to this terrible massacre. We want art that deals with fighting gun laws, dealing with loss resulting from the use of guns, expressions of feelings about gun control and the American view of being controlled by the gun.

It is our hope to debut this book at Flame Con NYC’s first queer comic con August 20th and 21st 2016. All proceeds will be donated to the victims and family of the people effected by the tragic events at Pulse Bar.

Submission Process:

•Submissions open June 12th and close on July 15th at 11:59PM EST

•Submissions are open to anyone who is queer identifying or an ally.

•Send an email to johnjennisonart@gmail.com with the subject line “GUN CONTROLLED”.

•One page finished artwork, story, comic, etc. (1-2 pages max)

Send us your stories, tell us about people you've met, friends you have made. Send us the things you've written on your journeys - diaries, poems, short stories.
Send us photographs you have taken on your journeys, or the sketches you have sketched.
Tell us about the things you have found. Or decisions you have made. Or tell us about that great mixtape you made for that journey one time...

-        Take a photo / draw a picture best representing what you feel is your personal aesthetic (how you define P.A. is entirely up to you

-        Think of 3 words that describe you/fit the aesthetic
