DJ Frederick is issuing a call for submissions for the second 2011 issue of Signals: A Media Zine. I am looking for personal essays that involve radio related topics, interviews, and articles about any and all aspects of shortwave listening, free / pirate radio stations, community radio, low power radio and the “underground” era of FM radio. Artwork, fiction, poetry and any unusual or even remotely related topics are appreciated as well. Please send queries to: singinggrove@conknet.com

this zine seeks to document the experience of activists, trans* queer folk, radicals, anarchists, environmentalists, etc. living in rural areas, suburbia, or any place where it is hard to organize and feels like there are no resources for you. it does not aim to say there is something “wrong” with living in these spaces, but if the individual submitting has a disenfranchising experience then please share how you overcome that if you do/can.

poetry, art, articles (personal, how to, etc.), and any other media submission is more than welcome.

please send submissions to libirate at riseup dot net.

feel free share or ask any questions you may have. there is no deadline as of yet, but i'll update with any changes,

HOAX ZINE has pushed back the deadline for issue #5 FEMINISM & COMMUNITY!

potential ideas for material include, but are not limited to:

  • elitism (identity politics & border policing & hierarchies within communities)
  • cliques & exclusivities
  • success & personal stories
  • the environment (food politics & urban gardening & eco-feminism & women in farming/farm lands)
  • accessibility (language & locations (urban vs rural) & academia & pretention & childcare)
  • work/ production (economics & capitalism)
  • social movements (then vs now - legacy of the 60s)
  • assimilation vs liberation (when, if, and how to assimilate)
  • the self (self-care & where the self ends and community begins)
  • what makes a community (how does one feel included? & how do we include others & what it means to find a “home” (limits of family))
  • networking (action & teamwork & friendship)
  • “diversity” (do we need varieties of people in a community? & tolerance vs acceptance (cultural relativity)
  • space (physical/ emotional)
  • legislation (policy & community organizing)
  • love (hate & anger)

we also totally need lots of artwork (photos, collages, illustrations, drawings, paintings, comics, etc.)! particularly for background designs and things that compliment the written material.

we would like the zine to be finished as soon as possible, and would prefer to receive submissions by april 21st. if you are interested, please feel free to e-mail us your ideas for topics, or questions!

in solidarity,
rachel & sari

I am working on a new zine called " Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow- Living with and understanding alopecia". The title is subject to change. To quickly describe alopecia I can tell you that it is a form of hair loss that leads to patchy baldness of the scalp that can lead to the entire body. It is a perzine/medical zine that gives honest firsthand information from myself after living with it for over 10 years. I'm going to to give facts and discuss my own personal accounts so people can understand the side effects of treatments and make better informed decisions. If any one has any poetry, stories, art, beauty tips, or anything regarding hair loss casued by alopecia it is much welcomed! Feel free to send me a message. I also would be happy to submit art for anyone's zine who is interested. Two examples of my art are on my page. Contributers will get credit, a free zine, and the option to advertise anything they wish to promote, which is all I would expect in return.  My postal address is:

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." - Oscar Wilde

I always thought that this was a beautiful quote, full of hope. I liked the idea that people could view the same things through a different perspective. A friend told me this quote meant that some of us were laying on our backs. He suggested something seedy and underhanded. That’s the Filth, too.

The Filth zine is a collection of fiction by various authors. We celebrate the struggle to overcome. We’re pulling ourselves out of a dark, dirty place. We’re vomiting up our drunken late nights, three drinks over our limit. We’re on our backs, our legs wrapped around someone, holding on for dear life. We’re pushing away the ones who would hold us down; jumping off the cliff with the people who protect our hearts as if they were precious. We’re sulking through the night, sleeping through the long winter days. We’re making a world where the person with the sharpest tongue and the quickest wit is triumphant.

We imagine. We create.

The Filth is ALWAYS accepting short story contributions. Our first issue is out NOW. We’re working on a spring issue, so get in touch.

Crazed Mazes is looking for submissions. I also would be happy to submit art for anyone's zine who is interested. Currently I am not offering monetary compensation. If your submission is accepted you will receive all due credit, a free copy of the issue you were published in, and free advertising for anything you wish to promote (which is all I expect in return if you publish my art). Submissions of political, religious, or derogatory nature will not be considered for Crazed Mazes.
