Call for Submissions

Femmentine is a queer space for examining femme identity

  • We resist the notion of “natural beauty”— beauty is unnatural, what we are doing is something that we create for ourselves. We seek not to simply conceal the faults in our skin but to transform ourselves into something greater than human.

  • We resist the idea that the power in the feminine comes from the ability to attract men. We are powerful of our right. Our power comes from ourselves and our communities and does not need male validation to be real.

  • We gain power through beauty rituals that prepare us to face the world. Sometimes this means putting on six layers of eyeshadow, sometimes it is as simple as putting on sweat pants.

  • We understand femme as a means of forming bonds with other femmes. Doing your friend’s makeup is an intimate and important act. Our femme identities are shaped by our connections with those we care for. By participating in these rituals, we and our friends construct our own ideas of what beauty means for us.

  • We recognize that the meaning and action of femme can change for different people. Femme identity interacts with with the other identities we carry and shapes the ways in which we express it.

Hi!

I'm looking for women writers who are interested in sci-fi to contribute to issue 2 of my mini zine Nebula. The theme is: 'The Traveller'. Your piece could be about a time traveller, an alien, or a very ordinary human who discovers a weird experiment... It's up to you! What I'm accepting:

Flash fiction: 75-100 words

Short poems: 15 lines (max)

I'm also looking for film/DVD/book reviews. These don't need to follow the theme but they must be in the sci-fi genre and they must be under 150 words.

The deadline is: 24th December 2014

Please send submissions to Samina at nebulazine@outlook.com

Those who will be featured in the zine will be contacted with further information.

Thanks and good luck with your submissions! :)

Hello, Girl Love is still looking for submissions and there is a month til the deadline!
We have a facebook group for if you want to stay in touch with what's going on, contribute to it or read it eventually: https://www.facebook.com/girllovezine

We also want to REVIEW YOUR ZINES. A page of our zine will be dedicated to reviewing the zines made by girls (not necessarily with a feminist focus, anything goes). We won't "rate" them but just write a bit about what we thought of it, what it made us think about and then recommend it to people if we think it's good. We could run the review by you before we publish it if you would prefer that.

This will be the first issue of the zine so we can't really say how big the readership will be but the zine is going to be available in paper and later also online. You're very welcome to send us your zines in the post or digitally if you want yours included. In return you will get a digital copy of Girl Love which you can print/distribute as you want.

Email us here: girllovezine@hotmail.com for more info.

Thanks, H + E x
