Hello! I’m making a zine that celebrates our own very ways with makeup. This is all about not catering to the likes of men or others and doing whatever the hell we want, as long as it makes us feel good.

What I’m looking for:

Looking for stories of your relationship with makeup and how it’s empowered+changed you as a woman. I wanna know about the time a boy in your class asked why you were wearing red eyeshadow and the next day you came in with an weirder/better look to bother him. I also wanna know why you wear makeup and how it makes you feel.

Send in pics of you wearing coral mascara or glitter eyebrows, defying expectations of makeupping, looking your best, looking your worst. Pictures of makeup collections and tutorials are cool too!

Feel free to submit anything that somehow relates to feminist makeupping. Anything and everything will be appreciated!!!

Contributors will receive a copy of the finished zine.

Contact me at fruitfacezine@gmail.com. Include your name, age, and address (for mailing purposes). Deadline is January 23.

Now accepting submissions! In a joint effort between the Nearsighted Narwhal and Creative Colloquy we are accepting submissions of a noir/crime nature for an audio CD titled “Valentine’s Day Massacre at the Narwhal” to be released on … you guessed it Valentine’s Day.

Submissions should be approx. 700 words of a dark crime nature. Should be very theatrical, as this will be recorded for entertainment purposes. We will be accepting the top 7 stories. Once accepted, the author (if local to the Western Washington area) will be asked to record at the Narwhal. Out-of-towners will be asked to record an audio file digitally and send it in. Story may be read by actors or friends if the author so decides. Selected work from local Western Washington Artist will be featured at Creative Colloquy in print the week of Valentine’s day.

Ossain of the Narwhal will provide Folio in post-production. A few musical selections will also appear on the CD.

Featured authors will receive one CD as payment.

Tell your friends!

Submissions are to be sent to submit@creativecolloquy.com with the subject: Massacre. Submission due Jan 17th 2015

Call for Submissions

Femmentine is a queer space for examining femme identity

  • We resist the notion of “natural beauty”— beauty is unnatural, what we are doing is something that we create for ourselves. We seek not to simply conceal the faults in our skin but to transform ourselves into something greater than human.

  • We resist the idea that the power in the feminine comes from the ability to attract men. We are powerful of our right. Our power comes from ourselves and our communities and does not need male validation to be real.

  • We gain power through beauty rituals that prepare us to face the world. Sometimes this means putting on six layers of eyeshadow, sometimes it is as simple as putting on sweat pants.

  • We understand femme as a means of forming bonds with other femmes. Doing your friend’s makeup is an intimate and important act. Our femme identities are shaped by our connections with those we care for. By participating in these rituals, we and our friends construct our own ideas of what beauty means for us.

  • We recognize that the meaning and action of femme can change for different people. Femme identity interacts with with the other identities we carry and shapes the ways in which we express it.

Send us your:

Feel free to include a short bio or description with your work but no pressure.

All contributors will be sent a copy once it is finished! (Let us know if you would prefer digital or print + tell us where to send!)
