a place for zinesters - writers and readers
Sugared Water is now seeking work for its inaugural issue.
Sugared Water is a literary magazine by and for people who love words. We three founding editors met in graduate school, land of pushing and pulling, reading and writing, caffeinated late-night critiques and exhausting, joyful breakthroughs. It was during our own growth as writers (and editors—we’ve all served on other lit mags), that we’ve come to this idea to carve out a hideaway for things that we adore.
If we could candy words, we’d eat them to bellyaches every afternoon. We carry journals and collect chapbooks like Smaug ripping through a gold-sequin disco. If we’re lucky enough to leave something behind that enriches the dialogue of writerly types around the world, so much the better. Send us your stuff—we’ll only hoard it for a little while.
Sugared Water reads April 1 – July 1 and October 1 – January 1.
Poetry: 5 poems, no more than 10 pages.
Fiction: up to 7,500 words, though up to 3,500 is preferred. Here be fans of speculative fiction. We dig the literary stuff too, don’t let our fairy tales fool you. Give us your briar patches and shady ladies, your heroes and literary tales. We ain’t afraid of tarot.
Creative Nonfiction: Yes, we love the lyric essay. We adore character sketches, journal entries, letters, and flash nonfiction. We’ll try experimental prose-poem forms and things that blend and bend the lines of reality whilst remaining true at the heart. We’ll check out your braided essays and hermit crabs, your lists and even your word maps. Stun us with the beauty of your words. Up to 7,500 words.
Art, Sequential Art, & Comics: Up to 5 images (JPGs), all media considered. Don’t be afraid to write on photographs and scribble over paintings. Layers are wonderful, and we’d love to see the things you’ve been hiding in your sketchbooks.
