I've been to see the hall, I live in the next street. It's a good size, like a village church hall or school hall, and it has a little stage down one end made of blocks. I think after xmas's a good time, but not too near, because there's so much happening round xmas, and people are skint immediately after (I know well, because my birthday's the 12th of jan!) but it goes a bit quiet after that, a good time to cheer people up with something

Edd one of the guys from the LZS is on here definitely, I think it'd be a great idea asking him for help

I think it would be best to organise it at a time when the students are still here as well, because I bet lots of students would be interested in coming, so I guess either before the end of November or after Mid Jan would be best

Thanks Toby, the more the merrier really. I see what they say when they reply to the email.

I think it'll be fine, the lady who runs the bookings for the West Hill used to play guitar in Witch Knot (80's riot grrl anarcho punk band!) so I reckon they'll be into it. They have noise gigs there every month so I reckon a zine fair should be tame in comparison! I put on gigs in Brighton so if you did want any help with organising/posters (which I can get printed cheap) or organising bands for the evening (if you thought that was a good idea) then just let me know

Then I remembered one point and added:
"But I should add, racist or discriminatory zines would not be welcome
Thanks
Emma"

Here's what I emailed

"I'm emailing from the Brighton ZInesters group, we're interested in setting up a little zine fair in Brighton over the coming months, there's been similar events at the Cowley Club before, but it's a small venue with limited opening hours, and we're interested in holding something in a more spacious venue that's open at the weekends, particularly Saturday or Sunday afternoons .The event would have stalls both from local zine makers/distros in the group, and other zine makers from further afield, with zines of all types, from all over the world, and hopefully with some workshops and educational activities too. We would be happy to combine with a band night on the same day too, with maybe zines as the main thing in the afternoon, with bands in the evening. Either stall-holders clubbing together to pay the hall rental fee, or stalls being free with a small door fee like £1 with all proceeds going to the hall would be fine with us, whatever is best for you. The London Zine Symposium is always incredibly popular, and it would be nice to have a similar event in such a creative place as Brighton.

Would the hall be interested in hosting this type of event, and what sort of prices are we looking at?
Thanks,
Emma

I almost forgot about the religion aspect. Admittedly the Quakers are hardly fire and brimstone, but it might bother some people. I'm going to email the West Hill People now

i think it depends what kind of event you hold as to how much they would charge.

I was looking into Southampton venues too, but perhaps Brighton would be easier. I could help organise etc too.
