Definition of the Avant Garde

"Avant-garde (French pronunciation: [avɑ̃ɡaʁd]) means "advance guard" or "vanguard".[1] The adjective form is used in English, to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.

Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm. The notion of the existence of the avant-garde is considered by some to be a hallmark of modernism, as distinct from postmodernism. Many artists have aligned themselves with the avant-garde movement and still continue to do so, tracing a history from Dada through the Situationists to postmodern artists such as the Language poets around 1981.[2]"

no but really - ive never taken them seriously before or known what to do with them, though they tak about 2hrs each to make, and i have made in total probably 200 approx over the years, but i never knew what to do with them, and people never knew how to take them. ive never been able to get them published, but maybe using them as covers is a neo-avant garde act.

also - has anyone ever come across non-linear books in the realm of experimental publishing?

Bern porter is great! thanks for turning me onto him. his collages ctually remind me a bit of the ones i used to do as a teenager, that i know have incorporated into cover art for zines (covers are my favourite). the zine itself is pretty straight edge, as i publish people's work, but if i was to make a zine where i had full creatve control i would want to go full xperimental

here are some pics of collages;

My brother wrote his Phd thesis on the New York school, In Process of Poetry. I agree avant garde is fluid these days - how avant agarde! Looking up Ben POrter now.

Anyone here into Bern Porter with his found art, or the New York School, etc? question: what nowadays constitutes the avant-garde? You only have about 5 seconds before the Hegemony appropriates you and you're on sale at Walmart. So we gotta move fast!!!
