Definition of the Avant Garde

"Avant-garde (French pronunciation: [avɑ̃ɡaʁd]) means "advance guard" or "vanguard".[1] The adjective form is used in English, to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.

Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm. The notion of the existence of the avant-garde is considered by some to be a hallmark of modernism, as distinct from postmodernism. Many artists have aligned themselves with the avant-garde movement and still continue to do so, tracing a history from Dada through the Situationists to postmodern artists such as the Language poets around 1981.[2]"

Avant Garde Collaboration 10 Replies

I want to start an avant garde collaborative zine. Is anyone interested? I am thinking anything goes, minimalism, deconstuctivism, arte povera, cut up writing, non-linear writing, whatever. Continue

Hi Liz, sounds interesting. If I've got time I'd like to contribute something - probably one page text and one page art. I'm thinking of playing around with the exquisite corpse technique for both.

I like that idea Jamiel, I think we should try that. Let's say up to 2 pages?

In response to LizW's post about a collaborative Avant Garde Zine: perhaps one person can contribute one "page". they can be arranged and put together. it might be kind of haphazard, but the results could be interesting (for my page it would probably incorporate words and images).

(…) They thrive on change and impermanence, favour process over product, and risk on being thrown away. They court failure. Yet this book argues that such failure should be understood not as an indication of defeat, but as an expression of the vanguard nature of these publications and their refusal to commercial interests.

no but really - ive never taken them seriously before or known what to do with them, though they tak about 2hrs each to make, and i have made in total probably 200 approx over the years, but i never knew what to do with them, and people never knew how to take them. ive never been able to get them published, but maybe using them as covers is a neo-avant garde act.

also - has anyone ever come across non-linear books in the realm of experimental publishing?

Bern porter is great! thanks for turning me onto him. his collages ctually remind me a bit of the ones i used to do as a teenager, that i know have incorporated into cover art for zines (covers are my favourite). the zine itself is pretty straight edge, as i publish people's work, but if i was to make a zine where i had full creatve control i would want to go full xperimental

here are some pics of collages;
