Submission Guidelines for issue #4 of my fanzine Muchacha

Theme: “Who Says Feminists Don’t Have A Sense Of Humor?”

The purpose of this issue is to combat the stereotype that feminists are always angry/unfunny/too serious/uptight. I’m looking for satirical/humorous thoughts, poetry, stories, essays, quotes, rants, analysis, art, collages, doodles, comics, or photography from a feminist perspective. Whether it’s half a page or 4 pages, e-mail me at Riotgrrrl56@yahoo.com to submit your work. The deadline is September 1st. Help me in reclaiming the fact that “funny feminist” is not an oxymoron.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: ASUANG by PAPER MONSTER PRESS

Asuang is an umbrella term for creatures that people our imagination. As blood suckers, they engender in us, a fear of the dark, of morbidity, of paleness, of incense. The fear that desires, the fear that suffocates, not just creatures but open spaces and high places. Fear of beings that when looked at mirrors or through other eyes, resemble perhaps, ourselves? Then here maybe, there be monsters?

Asuang then calls not just for darkness but for hallucinogen, psychedelia, kaleidoscopic narratives in whatever genre.

Specifically, we ask for:
1. 1-3 poems/ essays/ flash fiction (less than 500 words, English or Filipino)

2. 1-3 artworks in black/ white (in JPEG format)

3. 1-3 sound pieces in MP3 or Wav format

4. Critical essays about the small press/ underground publishing/ the culture of fanzines (also under 500 words)

5. Reviews of any issue of Paper Monster Press (and we’ve done 6 so far)

c. Issue 3: Time-space Warp (about timezones/ cultural differences/ time and space/ reincarnation/ and the endless echoes we can never reach)
d. Issue 4: Labyrinths (canals/ road bridges/ the strange and devious routes we take to fantasy/ intoxication/ escape)

Paper Monster Press's 7th issue is a tribute, a dialogue, an ekphrasis of Lirio Salvador, his words and his works.

... ... More than this though is his indefatigable energy to work, to share his thoughts, to move in the infinity that is the universe, and stand as one; not alone, but at one with the universe.

Lirio often says: "Love one another". "All is well." "All will be well". And it is this energy, this spirit, that we wish to bring to the 7th issue. SANDIGAN TAYO NI LIRIO.

Dealing with the theme: SANDIGmaan accepts works inspired by and/or written/produced for Lirio Salvador. His SANDATAS, the music of Elemento, and before that Intermidya, the organic unity that comes with fusing sound and sculpture into one Dali-like, almost surreal vision. The cosmic cannibalism spoken of by Dali, comes alive in Lirio's works. Everything is surreal, and real, because actualized.

Having said that, how you interpret, move with, or antagonize the theme is up to you.

1. Submit up to 3 literary works (poetry, flash fiction, essay) in English/ Filipino. Submissions must not exceed 500 words.
2. Submit up to 3 artworks (paintings, photographs, sculptures, collages, etc.) in JPEG or PDF format. Submissions may be colored and/or black/white.
3. Submit up to 3 sound pieces in MP3 or Wav format.
4. All submissions should be sent to papermonsterpress@yahoo.com.
5. The deadline for submissions is on February 15, 2012.

ONE LAST RALLYING CRY FOR QUEER PUNK: DEADLINE EXTENDED (OCTOBER 31, 2011)

 

You draw lines and you draw lines, and then you shape boxes and boxes and try to decide which ones fit you best. But have you ever stepped outside the line, and think, coming this far, how much farther would you dare? That’s why, people who are openly queer call this term coming out of the closet. Because we close ourselves, and cage our hearts, and throw away the key. This issue, we dare you to come out with us. Cross those lines on tightropes, shrug off gender boundaries, do away with stereotypes. We are who we are, and if we know this then labels don’t matter at all. Because we’ve got to honour the differences, or what’s the same wouldn’t count.

 

And who could be more queer, or more punk than us? We ask you once again to trust us with your submissions. We ask you to explore the boundaries of gender, race, stereotypes, rebellion, and anarchy. We ask you to give us your poetry, your art, and your music, in its most rebellious, most queer punk. Mainstream or underground, gay or lesbian, hardcore or soft porn, and hey, even alpha males are welcome. We want you to colour our worlds queer(punk). Now there are no rules, no boundaries, we’ll make our love on wastelands and through the barricades (Spandau Ballet).

 

We are interested in works that question, that reveal, that critique, that ask, that makes us curious. We want to see colors, and explosions, and madness, we want works that ignite our passion for equality and justice. We want works that ask for human dignity for all. We want works that make us want to shrug off oppression, and put it aside to forever after never be worn by anyone again. Because Who in the New World does not have a horror of the past, whether his ancestor was torturer or victim? Who in the depth of conscience, is not silently screaming for pardon or revenge? The pulse of New World history is the racing pulse beat of fear, the tiring cycles of stupidity and greed (Derek Walcott). And it need be that no longer. In the dawn of the New Age, we ask you to join us to fight for human dignity for all. Gay or lesbian, man or woman, colored or white; all different, all beautiful. And in this great future, you can forget your past, so dry your tears, I say (Bob Marley).

Hi Liz, sounds interesting. If I've got time I'd like to contribute something - probably one page text and one page art. I'm thinking of playing around with the exquisite corpse technique for both.

In response to LizW's post about a collaborative Avant Garde Zine: perhaps one person can contribute one "page". they can be arranged and put together. it might be kind of haphazard, but the results could be interesting (for my page it would probably incorporate words and images).
