24 Hour Zine Thing

Each July, the 24 Hour Zine Challenge asks zinesters to create a 24-page zine from conception to final product in 24 hours straight. Zines should be of suitable size and technical difficulty so that this truly is a challenge for individual zinesters.

neither doll houses nor tree houses: on living outside of the gender binary

finished in under 24 hours for the chicago zine fest, this zine focuses on the ups and downs of finding myself outside of the gender binary and attempts to both de- and re-construct various questions about my own gender as well as gender in general. three separate sections discuss feeling pushed out of femininity, how masculinity is viewed as inherent and femininity is viewed as a fictitious performance, how striving for the “perfect balance” of two genders is not plausible nor an adequate solution, acceptance or tolerance (or neither) that i feel in specific spaces, how my radical friends misgender and disrespect me more often than my non-radical ones, the (non-) accessibility of queer jargon and language, how coming out has garnered me the most intense gender assumptions yet, dealing with friends who don’t “get it”, my desire to validate my own identity without stepping on the identity of others, and checking white privilege. 32 pgs, ½ size, b&w. $2-3 or trade. message me or e-mail youvegotafriendinpa (at) gmail (dot) com for more info!

I just joined, so I'm a bit late at posting my 24-hour zine. It was created on July 2, 2011 and is an ode to my least favorite art supply- the oil pastel crayon.

My zine pretty much met my criteria: more art than writing. It's a little perzine-y, a lot Jawbreaker-y heh. It's got a little color on pretty much every page.

If anyone would like to trade, email me at sxretton at gmail dot com. I'll also gladly accept $2, which you can send to PO Box 391, Madera, CA 93638.

you’ve got a friend in pennsylvania #5 is now finished!

having worked at in a warehouse for the past month and a half, i’ve spent a lot of time within a “boys’ club” environment. daily struggles with hearing racist and sexist bullshit and making attempts to challenge the mindsets of those around me have left me defensive and drained. this zine, done in 24-ish hours for the dc zine fest, is about resisting militant masculinity on the job, learning how to more effectively call out shitty behavior, and how i have created a safer space for myself (and hopefully some others) at work. b&w, 1/4 size, 20 pages. includes original photography by yours truly! $1 or trade. if interested, please send me a message or e-mail youvegotafriendinpa(at)gmail(dot)com

Thanks, Raven! You answered fabulosly. This is such an amazing thing, I'm turning my 24 hour zine into a monthly project for myself...so Elliot Smith Stabbed Himself In the Heart will be done in 24 hours each month - issue #1 the official July submission, each consecutive month just a big ole' challenge for myself! Thank you so much for creating this!!! <3 hearts! <3 <3

@Deirdree - don't worry about it. Only the master copy of the 24 hour zine has to be completed during the 24 hour period in July - if you need to make extra copies or anything else after that time, that's completely fine!

And I know there has been a lot of talk on the forums about how strictly the rules are enforced, etc. Really as long as you create an entire 24 page zine during one consecutive 24 hour period during the month of July, your zine will qualify for the 24HZT, you will receive a pin and have your zine featured on the website. My only big thing is that this cannot be a compilation zine of things you have written over the past year or an art zine of your "best of" from the past few years. Everything that physically goes into the zine must be done within the 24 hour period.

Hope that clears some things up, and if you have any questions feel free to post them here or message me!

I only made 13 copies of my 24 hour zine & sent them to all my zine friends so am now out of stock. Would it be cheating to print a second edition to trade with other 24 hour zine people? I didn't know there was trading amongst us! & thank you for the kind email, Raven, re: my Elliot Smith Stabbed Himself In the Heart <3

Today is the last day of the 2011 24 Hour Zine Thing! If you have not completed your zine yet, depending where you are in the world, you still have time to complete it!
