We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

We're closing in on the end of the year and maybe it's a still a bit early to be thinking about New Year's resolutions and goals for next year. I don't really make New Year's resolutions anymore (I never keep them) but I do set goals, and I've been giving a lot of thought to what I want to do with zines in 2010.

Here are my zine goals for 2010:

~Put more effort into getting my zines out there via fliers, distros, trades, etc.
~Finally do that zine workshop I've been talking about
~Get better at HTML and learn CSS so I can make cool zine-related websites
~Experiment more with zine size and layout
~Do the 24 Hour Zine Thing again in July!

Does anyone else set zine goals like this? What are yours for the upcoming year?

So, looking back over this post from 1/3, some updates:

#1: I did finish Syndicate Product 15, although not until February. Still, I'm happy with the final product.

#2: SP15 was still photocopied. The Office Depot was doing a great deal of 50% off for all orders submitted online, so I couldn't pass that up. At 28 pages, it wasn't worth it to go offset this time. However, I did learn a lot about what printers to use when I do a larger issue, and what the file requirements are as well.

#3: Finally got the "back issue" packages up in the Etsy store. Some great deals here (syndprod.etsy.com)

#4: Decided against the postcard zine project for now, but working on something different, a more personal series of minizines. Haven't finished any of those yet, though. I guess that will now become #5 on the list!

So, how is everyone else doing with their "goals", now that 1/4 of the year is already gone? (Eeeep!)

#1: Get Syndicate Product 15: COMING CLEAN produced by end of January. I have all the entries, just need to do a massive layout and design bender.

#2: Work with an actual printer as opposed to doing all the copying, folding, and stapling myself for SP15.

#3: Put together a few "back issue" packages for the Etsy store (syndprod.etsy.com) to clear out some back stock.

#4: (Possibly) start a weekly postcard zine project, inspired by reading about SF fanzines in the 30s that used to do them.
Mine are:
- to actually finish my first perzine, and make it a monthly publication.
- go to zine fests and swap
- complete the one off comics I've had in mind
- constantly update my zine tumblr with content
- and make friends and contacts who love zines, of course. they seem to be lacking where I live
I'll probably focus on few things;

-Send out zines to those I owe zines in zine swaps
-Make some more zines
-Do the24-Hour Zine Thing (hopefully)
-Submit some of my more decent zines to stores and distros (international, as the zine scene in Norway is almost non-existing, at least in my area)
To make the damned thing! To cure my writer's, artist's, collagestress block. To get my awesome boyfriend to help me with mine - I was reading a Cometbus anthology the other day and he borrowed it and said he really liked it. It also helps that he is, from what I can tell so far, very creative and intelligent. I am sure he will have insightful things to say, and I am excited to have someone I know take an interest in zinedom. No one I know directly, that I can make eye contact with on a day to day basis, has any idea about it.
Publishing the first issue of an annual zine on DIY culture and possibly starting to write my first personal zine...
For me it's getting something scanned and up ONLINE which keeps being put off (have to brush up on my scanner, I can't get crisp clean lines, gotta play with the contrast balance).

And printing issue 3 through 10. Everything is in sections, but I do print runs of 100 each, so that's $114 per issue. I've got the money (sorta) but still haven't done the physical cut and paste putting them all together. Some stuff has to be redrawn which takes time.
