websites!

I know we've covered livejournal, but what about websites? (I don't think this has been discussed, let me know if it has.)

Are you paying for your site, or do you have a free one? How do you design it? Tips and tricks? Or just shameless advertising. :)

I'm just getting into it, so mine is pretty bare, but I'm hoping it'll be somewhere where I can kind of group all my various locations together and direct people to it instead of saying, "Well, you can find me here, or here, or here..." (You can now find me here! http://starblanketriverchild.webs.com/ Though not very much of me yet.)

Why do you have a website? Or why not?

I think ultimately having a paid site is more professional, but if you don't have a lot of money you could always start with a free site and move to a paid one when you're more flush. That's what I'm doing anyway!

Thanks! I did the layout when I had a really boring temp job, where I had to sit at a reception desk in case something happened, but without much to do, because the work was so simple I'd get it all done for the day by 11 or so, so I had a lot of time on my hands to faff about with exact placements and so on

Yeah I started the website for photos, and added the zines bit later. I don't think anyone's going to expect you to have a fancy website just for some details of zines

I've had several websites and domains for my zines over the years... sometimes I've hosted them myself (or on a friend's server) and sometimes I've paid for it. Currently for QZAP we're using DreamHost. They're by far the best service that I've ever used (and I've been doing webstuff professionally since 1996.) I like their control panel, it's really easy to install lots of different software (Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, etc.) they are a "green" hosting company (they're carbon neutral) and their tech support is fantastic.

Also I should add as well that co.uk addressses are really cheap, they cost about £2 a year, much cheaper than .com ones.

i've got a personal website for my art & zines & stuff; http://www.tukrulovesyou.com i only just actually put it back up, i'd had some problems with it couple of months ago so it was sort of under construction until.. yesterday. there's a blog there too, http://tukrulovesyou.blogspot.com/
