I know we've covered livejournal, but what about websites? (I don't think this has been discussed, let me know if it has.)

Are you paying for your site, or do you have a free one? How do you design it? Tips and tricks? Or just shameless advertising. :)

I'm just getting into it, so mine is pretty bare, but I'm hoping it'll be somewhere where I can kind of group all my various locations together and direct people to it instead of saying, "Well, you can find me here, or here, or here..." (You can now find me here! http://starblanketriverchild.webs.com/ Though not very much of me yet.)

Why do you have a website? Or why not?

I pay for mine, but my account also covers a few other sites, one for work and one for the brighton zinefest, so I find it worth it, and the cost is minimal. I use www.moonfruit.com, they've got a drag and drop editor that produces quite fancy results. It's also good for the zinefest website, as the other members of the collective have logins for the site that let them edit it without having access to my account (although sometimes it gets a bit messy from lots of different people changing things, and I have to have a tidy, like at the moment)

hey! so how does this work? like you can manage different domains with one account? I'm also working on a website right now but i decided to do it the primitive and masochisticway--by actually coding it from scratch. does the site allows you to customaze and code things? I looked at it briefly and it seemed pretty cool...

Well, for me i need a website because I'm working on a project that would need and encourages the help of other people and it's always easier to do that if there is one central site that people can go to, to get the information they need.

I'm still debating on whether I should get a free site or pay for it. On the one hand, I am really broke so I'd like to spend as much money as I can... however, there seems to be a more professional and reliable appeal to having your own domain name... or maybe I'm wrong.. i don't really know. But i guess that dilemma boils down to what you need the website for :)

Most of the moonfruit stuff is drag and drop, but you can insert html snippets as well. I'm hopeless at any kind of coding, so it works great for me.

I pay for my site (I'm on Yahoo), and I create my own images in Photoshop, and use a combination of Dreamweaver (mostly for the image maps) and writing my own code for the site design. I really suggest learning HTML and CSS, even just the basics. It can really improve a website, and it's not hard to learn :)

i see that most of you pay for your sites... does it really matter if you have your own domain or not? like is it really more "professiona" to buy your own domain?
