We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

We Make Zines zine review discussion- What have you been reading?

So, this thread if for you to post what zines you are currently reading and maybe a bit of a review of them.

Yesterday I started reading The Urban Hermitt #22. I hadn't seen an issue of this in awhile and I got one from Hermitt at the zine symposium.... it may have been in 2007 which makes me a jerk for just now getting around to reading it, especially since it has consistently been one of my favorite zines. I even went on a zine tour with him and never missed on of his readings.

What I love about the Urban Hermitt is that you can hear the rhythm of his voice in his writing. Hermitt is grounded in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle to be exact. So, me being from Portland, I really get the under pennings and jokes about hippies and beer that is named after Northwest Rivers and Fish. The first story reads like a personal dare, to go to the young hip monster megachurch and see how many weeks it takes till he hears something homophobic so he can leave. The inner dialog and descriptions of the surroundings are priceless! The rest of the zine is filled with stories and observations full of both anger and amusement tinged with a queer-hippie-poet-hip-hop mash up.

If you have never read the Urban Hermitt I suggest picking a copy up. Hermitt's writing is always solid and always amusing.
