a place for zinesters - writers and readers

Question: How can I collect information for my zine.

I'm very limited. I want to collect things such as Commentaries/promote some good bands and comics and such. I'll give credit. I'm looking for a great jambalaya full of shit. Kinda like a VERY LARGE New York news paper.

Joining & posting/starting a thread in the Call For Submissions! group is a good place http://wemakezines.ning.com/group/callforsubmissions

&/or posting a blog on your profile (or a blurb in the about you section of your page) asking contributions/article and more information about what you'll looking for and your planned zine.

Usual thing is a free copy for people whose submissions get used.

Beck, I see from your profile that you're only 15, so I don't want to sound too cranky, but I've got to say a few things.

I saw that you did a blog post with a little info about what you're looking for in your zine, but it looks like you either deleted or heavily edited it and replaced it with a post containing only your link to your website. My computer's super slow, so I've decided not to try downloading it. It seems like Internet people are contantly urging people to go to link after link after link, and thereby creating far more steps than necessary. It seems like We Make Zines, indeed a few places on WMZ, is more than enough to communicate and connect with the info needed for submissions, ordering, etc. Also, when somebody deletes their posts, It gives the impression they're not very serioous about following through. That's a hassle for people who, wanting to "support the scene" and help out a newbie, put aside the time to write, do are or otherwise contribute, and then have nothing come of it.

Okay, having delivered my little lecture...

What's your deadline? Your physical address? Is this a compilation zine? That is, are you just going to be using photocopy ready pages contributors send to you, or are you going to be typesetting and doing your own layout? If photocopy ready pages are requested, what size. Standard? Digest? Other?

I may contribute, but need some details.

Do you know how much I know about zines? NOTHING. It was only an idea that came out of the blue. I have no clue what I'm doing at all. At the moment I'm just playing around with programs and hoping someone can give me advice.

Hey Beck, the best way to learn about zines is to read a ton. What kind of programs are you playing with? My husband is always urging me to do digital layouts or print from scans, but I prefer the classic cut-and-paste photocopier style. You don't need a program if it's a hassle.

One thing that makes me slightly more likely to respond to a call for submissions is some sort of theme for the zine. If you're calling for anything and everything, it's kind of hard to pick something out of thin air to submit. Then again, I've been seeing your posts in some of the groups and I have been trying to think of something to send you!

You might want to try hand-writing or a typewriter. I'm all about the glue stick. Soooo much more control.
