We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

Hi everyone - just after some thoughts on this please...

An artist has a picture I want to use for the fornt cover.  They actually drew the picture from another, so it's a copy....is this acceptable do we think?  I'm not sure how it works?

Thanks!

Is it a copy/almost exactly like the original artwork (not OK) or is it a new stylized representation of the art they used as inspiration (OK)? This came up for me with a poster we did for a pinball and arcade show I do promotion with. It was OK to feature famous arcade characters in the poster artwork as long as they weren't a direct copy of someone else's artwork, but were instead another artist's own stylized rendition of them.
nice one thanks - i think you pretty much echoed my thoughts that although I like the piece and wanted to use it, now i've found out it's really a direct copy drawing of a photo then I should probably not make it the cover.  thanks for your thoughts, appreciate it.
