We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

Is there a market for selling old zines as collectors items like comics?

I probably have a few hundred zines from the 90's. I have all pathetic life (at least I think I do, there was always one mysterious issue that never appeared). FF5, Rollerderby, Ben is Dead, Crank, Even Tank Girls Get The Blues, and on and on. I had a favorite one, can't remember the name right now, I just had issue #2, it was like 200 pages and all about this guy who was squatting in Florida at the time and all his travels. I always wanted to find the first one.

I've been hanging on to many of them in case someone ever became a famous writer, etc. :D I might consider auctioning on e-Bay if there is enough of a market for them.

Ah, gotcha, Dan. I'd assumed you meant articles being republished online. You're right, that's definitely a tricky situation. Personally, I'm more inclined to stand on the side of historical documentation (my own site is a history archive for mini-comics info) but it's still a case-by-case kind of thing, I guess.

And I'd bet you're right about zine libraries finding themselves faced with the same issues.
I not here to argue that nor talk about semantics and word use. Sorry.

Always the confused anal foreigner who has problems and doubts about the English language: Can I call a woman reselling a zine a cunt, or do I run the risk of being called a mysoginist? Because I'm sure there are women who do the same.

" someone should start a distro, that specialises in reprinting old zines!!!!!" Why don't you?

I'd find it completely unethical to profit from reprinting someone else's zine without their permission. That's far worse than reselling an old issue on ebay. I consider the old issue something you own and can resell, but making reprints from other zines and reselling them clearly is shady.
Well, what about just... reprinting them and asking instead for payment, for them to send you enough stamps to mail it and a few extra to help cover printing costs?

On top of that, contacting authors and getting the okay from them would be the best plan.

Let the record show that you can do whatever you want with my zine after it belongs to you. If there's some sucker out there ready to pay more than three bucks for it. Good for you.
Do anything with that copy, anyway. I also don't mind people copying for individual friends or whatever. I would be pissed if someone made copies and sold for a profit, of course.

"I love zine libraries, they're great places to steal old copies unavailable elsewhere. Thanks for providing the address."

Fun fact- Anyone who steals anything from any library anywhere is a complete piece of shit. Waiting for the punchline? There isn't one. You're an asshole. I think (hope) you're kidding, but it deserves to be mentioned.
Seriously, what Eric said. That is fucked up and not cool.

I was under the impression that that was a joke.

as long is not the first issue of maximum rocknroll or flipside i dont think is much of a market for such things
anyway as someone said: better donate this zine to a library
Yeah, pretty sure this was a joke; I am positive that there would be no one as stupid so as to post about doing something so obviously dumb and unethical on a community like this with any sort of seriousness.

Effective troll is effective, though.
