I've been on this website since it opened, and originally the forum was really great, people had actual mature discussions about things without getting derailed into idiocy. It just suddenly turned one day. There are plenty of members who were keen users at the start who now don't touch the forum with a bargepole. I'm starting to feel the same way.

I think Zacery's hit the nail right on the head. But what do you expect? The zine scene is full of people with diametrically opposed worldviews, sensibilities, personalities, aesthetics, etc., etc. Maybe the Internet, via this forum, has made it "Quick and EASY!" for some, or many of us, to finally vent years, maybe decades, of the supressed peeves, grudges and resentments against zinesters we didn't have the time or energy to in the pre-internet era. (Of course, I make an effort not to indulge these myself ;) ).

Actually, I like the more animated discussions. Hoping not to seem ungrateful to Krissy for creating this forum for us all, I'd rather that more people, yes, even a few riot grrrlz, joined Heath Rowe's APA , .zap!!, and aired some of their frustrations there---I think the slower process may yield a more thoughtful, civil and insightful discussion----but WMZ is one of the very few web forums I participate in. Compared to others, I comment to it quite a lot.

I was going to try to save this brilliant thought to premiere in a zine I'm working on, but "there's a fine line between stimulation and irritation." I guess some people are more "irritated" by these knock-down-drag-out, snarky word-wars, while a few of us are a bit more "stimulated" by them. But I think it's great that people who might never give each other a second glance on the street are actually *talking to each other*. CROSS POLLINATION!

But I get it. Zinesters are opinionated. HUMANS are opinionated. If those opinions don't meld... well, clashing occurs.

I do think it's taken a BIT far, though. But what do I know, since I'm not annoyed.
Actually, I'm starting to get annoyed because everyone else is annoyed. How silly is that?

WMZ is a GREAT site, and has lots of potential beyond the forum. it's a phonebook of zinesters, it's the new pander, the new zine guide. i can get on here, search for a zinester, find them, and say "what's your address?"

i've been posting webcam-zine-reviews! that's awesome! you can post pictures, you can update people on new issues! i don't blog, but other ppl do. you can do lots on here. forums on any site will have a certain amount of bickering.

I'm annoyed because I'll be reading a thread about something that interests me, and then it will get derailed into name calling and pointless circular arguing, and then the original interesting discussion between mature adults will never actually happen. Poor Krissy had to actually post rules for conduct on the front page.

I stopped using the forum for a while because it irritated me so much, then I decided to start using it again and try to push against the tide by regularly starting positive discussion threads, but really, it makes no difference. I won't bother in future. I enjoyed using the forums before they were flooded with idiocy.

It's weird though, a few months ago, it wasn't this bad yet... i went on AWOL from this site for a few months and since i got back a few weeks ago, everyone--well not everyone (HAHA)-- just seems to be more viscious. makes me scared to give my opinion sometimes, really. makes me imagine being an uninfected human in a zombie movie... where if i make a comment someone doesn't like, i'd quickly be mulled or something... just saying... cause it's really sad

If you know enough to avoid the threads you don't care about and the posters you don't respect you'll be fine. When you see the same people getting into stupid arguments in every other thread you should know enough to avoid their posts. The problem is that sometimes these "pointless drama" threads drag people in who should know better than to even get involved and I include myself. I try not to post anything that doesn't directly involve zines, but sometimes I stupidly break this vow. I just did it this morning and after I posted I couldn't help but wonder why I even fucking bothered.

That's what's getting to me. I don't find anything else really annoying.

This seems like typical forum behaviour to me, which is why I avoided forums for so long in the first place. I thought this place would be different, I don't know why. I get I was holding zinesters to a higher standard than the rest of the world, which was silly of me. When I first joined this site it seemed pretty awesome, but I wasn't really getting involved in the form because, well, this sort of behaviour seems to crop up a lot there.

It's unfortunate, because there are some really good posts, or at least they start out that way, and it's really neat to be able to communicate with so many zinesters all at once and see how everyone does things differently, learn some tricks etc. But I find even my rational posts just get looked over when there's a fight going on, everyone seems to want to have the last word.

It kind of makes me miss the days before I knew about this place. It was harder to find other zinesters, but it also wasn't saturated in so much other crap. I mean, this first and foremost is a great place to connect with other zinesters, do trades, and hear about and plan events and stuff, but it never ceases to amaze me how people on forums can lose all maturity at the drop of a hat or suggestion.
