We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

I thought I would start a discussion about 24 Hour Zines.

Anyone revved up to start in on one at midnight tonight, as soon as we are officially in July? (Well, I'm sure in some parts of the world, it is already July.)

I decided to start mine at 6pm on July 10, after I get home from work and have some dinner. I picked a Friday to Saturday instead of a Saturday to Sunday because the copy shop I like is closed on Sundays. It's only open until 4pm on Saturday, but I'm pretty sure I can get my copying done before then. My plan is to stay up late on Friday night, sleep a few hours, finish writing and layout Saturday morning, make copies Saturday afternoon, and have all folding and stapling done by 6pm.

What plans do other folks have?

I am having a hard time not thinking about and planning my zine ahead of time. I do a lot of planning and writing in my head before I sit down at my computer, so my mind really wants to race ahead and figure out exactly what I want to do. I am having to concentrate on not thinking, which feels weird.

So post about your 24 hour zine as you're writing it (goals, frustrations, joys,) and tell us about it once you are done. I really want to know exactly how long people worked on theirs. I plan to keep close watch on the clock as I make mine.

I tried to do a 24 hour comic this year, but crashed and burned.

I love the idea of a 24 hour zine.

What do people think about setting an actual date for an annual 24 hour zine day like they have for 24 hour comics?

I also thought that a 24 hour zine event can be featured a day before most zine fests as a fun kick start to the event.

I made a 24 hour zine and managed not to plan it in advance, by not deciding to do it until I was on an internet cafe and saw my friends at home were doing 24 hour comic day. So i chose to join in, on my own in a foreign city, and it turned out only a semi-comic really, more of a perzine. It was great, because i was tired of being on my own doing the same old thing in a new country each couple of days. This let me augment my holiday note-taking experience while feeling connected to people back home!
Hi guys! I made my first 24 hour zine on October 26- I Can't Read Lips Unless They're Touching Mine. It's about kissing. :) Theories on why humans kiss, a few little stories about awkward or memorable kisses I've had (including my first, of course!), some fun facts and nice quotes, and a list of people I'd like to kiss! It was written between 10am and 6pm, and cut and pasted by 10pm. (With a short break to go bowling- which I also wrote about!) I've been having trouble with my perzine, so it was great to just get a zine out in such a short period of time. I'm pretty pleased with it. :) You can find it in my etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/romannumerals or message me here to discuss a trade (though I won't be able to send out trades till around the end of November when I get my next paycheck!) :)
