SUMMARY:Women of Color Zine Symposium
DESCRIPTION:\nThe image people have of Portland is mainly based on the
white majority who live here - 76.1 % of the population, according to
the 2011 U.S. Census. But the other 23.9%, the other Portland, they h
ave a voice too. And the Women of Color Zine (WOC) group is one of the
ways... ...that other voice can be heard. Tonya Jones started the WOC
ZINE WORKSHOPS in the fall of 2009. Tonya was first introduced to zin
es when she had to make a creative project for her Women’s Studies c
lass at Portland State University. She enjoyed the process so much she
decided to bring her work to the Portland Zine Symposium. It was then
she realized the lack of diversity in zine creators and symposium att
endees. The next time she attended the symposium, she lead a workshop
called “Women of Color: Writing and Activism.” The response went s
o well, she decided to host monthly workshops for women of color inter
ested in self-publishing and that is how the group was formed. The WOC
Zine group has published two issues of their zine collective “Women
of Color: How to Live in the City of Roses and Avoid the Pricks.\" Is
sue one is about navigating racism/gentrification in Portland; issue t
wo focused on fashion and art of WOC in Portland. Both issues are avai
lable for $3 from the group, Powell’s Bookstore and In Other Words.
The zines can also be checked out from the Multnomah County Library.Th
e group is currently working on their third issue to be sold at the sy
mposium! The symposium is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture
Council. The event is also being co-sponsored by the Women’s Resour
ce Center at Portland State University (PSU). The symposium will be he
ld at PSU's Smith Memorial Student Union. What's a zine? \"A zine is m
ost commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriat
ed texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-publi
shed work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier. Zin
es are written in a variety of formats, from computer-printed text to
comics to handwritten text (an example being Cometbus). Print remains
the most popular zine format, usually photo-copied with a small circul
ation. Topics covered are broad, including fanfiction, politics, art a
nd design, ephemera, personal journals, social theory, etc.\"(Wikipedi
